Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. - The Great Lakes Loons offense stalled due to an excellent pitching performance from the Peoria Chiefs, who earned a 6-2 victory on Sunday at Dow Diamond.
Dennis Ortega proved to be the difference maker as he ripped his ninth double of the season to center field, scoring Luken Baker and Yariel Gonzalez to give the Chiefs (18-10) a 3-0 lead in the top of the sixth.
The two-RBI single was enough to chase Loons (8-22) starter Edwin Uceta from the game. He went 5.1 innings and gave up three runs on nine hits and one walk. Uceta (L, 3-6), 20, struck out three hitters. In Uceta's previous start on July 16, he tossed 7.0 innings of three-hit baseball, striking out nine against the Burlington Bees.
Peoria also scored in the first inning off Uceta. A single from Baker drove home Andres Luna for an early one-run lead against the Loons.
The starting pitcher for the Chiefs, right-hander Alvaro Seijas, allowed four hits and three walks in 6.0 scoreless innings. The 19-year-old struck out nine hitters but found himself in some trouble upon coming out for the seventh.
To start the bottom of the seventh, Seijas (W, 3-6) walked Garrett Hope and gave up a single to Hunter Feduccia to put two Loons on-base. Robbie Gordon replaced Seijas and immediately recorded a double play. As Hope and Josh McLain were on the corners, Gordon threw a wild pitch. Gordon's wild pitch hit the backstop, which was far enough back to allow Hope to scamper home. The run trimmed the Loons deficit to 3-1 in the seventh.
Jasiel Alvino pitched the top of the eighth inning and allowed three runs while only recording one out. Then, the rain burst across the field at Dow Diamond.
After a 50-minute rain delay, catcher Garrett Hope out to pitch for the Loons. He tossed the end of the eighth inning and the first out of the ninth before departing from the game. He was replaced by third baseman Eric Peterson, who tossed the final two outs of the ninth inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, Brandon Montgomery launched his eighth homer of the season, cutting the Loons deficit to four runs.
Chiefs reliever Kodi Whitley retired the side in the bottom of the ninth, securing a 6-2 win.
The Loons and Chiefs finish the three-game series on Monday. First pitch is 12:05 p.m. for Grandparents Day.
