Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Davenport, IA- The Quad Cities River Bandits surrendered a trio of big two-run extra-base hits in three different innings as they dropped a 6-4 ballgame to the West Michigan Whitecaps on Sunday evening at Modern Woodmen Park.
West Michigan jumped out to a quick start when Garrett McCain worked a four pitch to open the game. The next batter, Kody Clemens, hit the first pitch he saw from starter Chad Donato out of the park to right field to put the Whitecaps ahead 2-0.
The lead doubled with the help of another long ball in the third inning. McCain singled to open that frame and was on first base when Jordan Pearce blasted a two-run home run of his own to right center to make it 4-0.
The Bandits cut the deficit in half in the top of the third inning. Seth Beer led off with a solo home run, his third of the season. David Hensley made it to second base when Cam Warner's throw to first was off target on a bouncer to third. He would score when Colton Shaver ripped a base hit into left field to reduce the West Michigan advantage to 4-2.
Back-to-back one-out singles from Alfredo Angarita and Ruben Castro put the tying run on base in the bottom of the sixth. Miguelangel Sierra drove a double into the gap to plate Angarita and put Castro on third. Logan Mattix evened the score with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Castro.
In the top of the seventh, right-hander Tanner Duncan retired the first two hitters of the frame before issuing consecutive two-out walks. Willy Collado was summoned from the bullpen and the first pitch he threw was turned around by Pearce for a two-run double that turned out to be the decisive blow in a 6-4 Whitecaps victory. The Bandits put two men on base in each of the final two innings, but could not pull closer.
The River Bandits outhit the Whitecaps 11-6 in defeat. Eight of the nine hitters in the lineup tallied at least one hit. Shaver, Castro and Sierra each had two. Beer extended his current hitting streak to nine games with his home run in the third inning. Pearce paced all hitters with four runs batted in for West Michigan.
