Utah Grizzlies News Release

Anchorage, Alaska - The Utah Grizzlies (15-15-2-4) battled and battled to collect a shootout point Saturday night in a 2-1 shootout loss to the league-leading Alaska Aces.

The game for the Grizzlies seemed destined to go against them from the very beginning, but with just 13 skaters taking regular shifts, they pushed the game to a shootout against the now 25-6-2-3 league-leading Aces. 18 seconds into the contest they went shorthanded for a clerical error on their opening lineup card, but emerged unscathed still in a scoreless hockey game.

Utah took a 1-0 lead 5:33 into the first period on Tysen Dowzak's first goal of the year as he fired a puck in through traffic. Paul McIlveen and Moises Gutierrez picked up assists. 20 seconds later, they were whistled for high-sticking, but killed that penalty and still held the lead.

The first-half of the third period the Grizzlies penalty-killers again lived up to the task, killing off a minor in the first two minutes of the frame with still a 1-0 lead. Alaska eventually tied the contest at one on a power-play goal at 5:33, before Utah went back to work and killed two-straight minutes shorthanded five-on-three for two consecutive minors just 14 seconds after the goal.

Utah goalie Shane Owen stopped 41 of 42 through overtime for the Grizzlies and four of five in the shootout as he played his best game of the year and kept Utah alive on several instances.

In overtime, the Grizzlies had several good chances, but were unable to bury them.

Owen stopped four of five in the shootout, while reining ECHL Goaltender of the Year Gerald Coleman stopped all five shots that he saw from Utah.

Utah completes their four-game road trip Wednesday in Colorado at 7:05 p.m.

The Grizzlies return home Friday and Saturday to host Idaho at 7:05 p.m.
