O'Brien Leads Stingrays Past Walleye

Toledo, OH - Forward Pierre-Luc O'Brien netted two goals including the game-winning marker to give the South Carolina Stingrays (17-16-1-1) a 3-2 victory over the Toledo Walleye (13-18-0-1) at the Huntington Center Sunday afternoon.

The Walleye kicked off the scoring on the power play at 4:28 of the first period when forward Andrej Nestrasil tapped a rebound past Stingrays goaltender Philipp Grubauer (W, 27 saves on 29 shots) at the left-wing post. Defenseman Bryan Rufenach and forward Harrison Reed earned assists. The Stingrays responded with a tally from forward David de Kastrozza at 10:25 from forwards Chris Doyle and defenseman Nick Tabisz. Just over a minute later, defenseman Joey Ryan gave the Walleye a 2-1 lead with help from forwards Paul Zanette and defenseman Phil Rauch at 11:28.

O'Brien knotted the contest back up with his 15th goal of the season at 7:32 of the second period from defenseman Derek Keller and forward Maxime Lacroix.

In the third period, O'Brien put the Rays on top at 3:36 beating Walleye netminder Rob Nolan (L, 23 saves on 26 shots) under the left pad from between the faceoff circles. Lacroix picked up the lone assist. The Stingrays ended the contest 0-for-1 on the power play while the Walleye finished 1-for-4.

The Stingrays continue a seven-game road trip Wednesday, January 11 against the Kalamazoo Wings at 7:00 p.m. at Wings Stadium and return to the North Charleston Coliseum Friday, January 20 against the Greenville Road Warriors at 7:05 p.m. for Dog Days of Winter featuring a Super Weiner Dog Race!
