Alaska Aces News Release

Nick Mazzolini's shootout goal was the only successful attempt in five rounds, and it was enough to give the Alaska Aces a 2-1 comeback shootout win over the Utah Grizzlies on Saturday night from Sullivan Arena. A relentless Aces attack eventually broke through against Utah netminder Shane Owen to tie the game late and win it in the extra session. The Aces win completed their second straight sweep, and lifted their point streak to ten games. Alaska improved their league best record to 26-5-5. The Aces will continue their home stand when they welcome the Stockton Thunder for three games on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Tickets are on sale now. The Aces outshot the Grizzlies 16-6 in the opening period, but allowed the only goal of the frame. Tysen Dowzak scored on a shot from the left point for his first goal of the season at 5:33. It gave Utah their first lead of the series, and a 1-0 lead at first intermission.

Neither team struck in the middle period as Alaska outshot Utah 9-4, but the Grizzlies hung on to their one-goal lead.

The Aces continued to pepper the net in the final frame, but Shane Owen was terrific, keeping Alaska at bay. Then at 5:09 of the frame, Bryan Miller scored his sixth goal of the year on a power play to tie the score 1-1. The Aces had a full two minute five-on-three power play later in the period, but could not pull ahead. Their penalty killing unit then held off a two-man advantage for Utah and the game went to overtime. After a scoreless session, Coleman closed the door in the shootout, stopping all five Grizzlies and Mazzolini's second round goal was enough to give Alaska the 2-1 win.

Gerald Coleman (17-4-2) earned the win, making 13 saves on 14 shots, and stopped five of five in the shootout, while Shane Owen (5-6-3) made 41 saves on 42 shots, and stopped four of five taking the hard luck shootout loss. The Aces power play went 1-6, while the Grizzlies went 0-3. Alaska outshot Utah 43-14 in the game.

The Aces will continue their home stand when they welcome the Stockton Thunder for three games on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Tickets are on sale now. For more information, please call the Aces at 907.258.ACES or visit them online at www.facebook.com/alaskaaceshockey.
