Utah Grizzlies News Release
WEST VALLEY CITY, UT - After defeating the Rampage 24 hours earlier, the flow of the re-match favored San Antonio as they built a two-goal first period lead and held on for a 3-1 victory ending their four-game losing streak and ending the Grizzlies four-game home point streak.
San Antonio jumped on the Grizzlies in the first period for a pair of goals. The first was scored off a turnover behind the Grizzlies net that had the puck find Scott Kelman in front of David LeNeveu where he backhanded a shot into the net for his first goal of the season in his ninth game. San Antonio increased their lead with a rebound goal by Joe Cullen in the final minute of the period assisted by Kelman and Paul Healey. For Cullen it was his fifth goal of the season and second for the Rampage since joining the team in early January. Utah outshot the Rampage 11-6 in the period but Travis Scott made several key saves including robbing Jarrod Skalde twice in the late stages of the period.
Neither team got on the scoreboard in the second period with each team mustering 10 shots on goal. Utah was called for 31 penalty minutes in the period including two 10-minute misconducts (Kiel McLeod and Dana Lattery).
The third period had a load of excitement with Utah cutting the lead to one goal after an undisciplined penalty against T.J. Reynolds gave Utah a major power play. David Cornacchia snapped a shot from the point that was re-directed by Martin Sonnenberg for his eighth goal of the season. Dana Lattery and Cornacchia earned the helpers on the power play goal. Utah maintained the power play but couldn't get anything past Scott and the game ended with an empty-net goal by Stephen Weiss, his 14th of the season, finalizing things at 3-1 in favor of the Rampage.
Utah outshot an opponent for the first time in 10 games with a 34-22 advantage but Scott made 33 saves earning his 16th victory of the season. LeNeveu made 19 saves taking the loss.
Utah will host the Houston Aeros in a special matinee game on Monday (President's Day) with face-off scheduled for 2:00 PM.
