February 19, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release
Jason King scored a highlight reel goal in overtime to give the Manitoba Moose a 3-2 win over the Edmonton Road Runners at the MTS Centre Friday night.
Familiar combatants Alex Auld and Tyler Moss lined up between the pipes for Manitoba and Edmonton respectively.
Tim Smith had a welcome return to the Moose lineup, scoring his second goal of the season on his first shift back since being recalled from Columbia of the ECHL. Smith deflected a point shot from Bieksa past Moss.
The Road Runners responded several minutes later to tie the game up. Brad Winchester swept the puck over to Kyle Brodziak, who fired the puck on Auld. Nate DiCasmirro then scooped up the rebound and deked around Auld to make it 1-1.
Edmonton almost took the lead late in the first. Tony Salmelainen rifled a shot that beat Auld but went off both posts before bouncing out.
After one period, shots were 9-9 as the two teams were tied at one goal apiece.
Ryan Kesler almost scored early in the second. He took a pass from Goren and fired it high over the net.
Things heated up between the two North Division rivals in the second. Wade Brookbank and Rocky Thompson squared off at centre ice, with neither combatant gaining an edge.
Several minutes later, Justin Morrison fought Mathieu Roy. Roy had the slight edge in the battle.
The Moose made it 2-1 after Peter Sarno made a beautiful cross-ice saucer pass right on the stick of Josh Green, who fired it past Moss glove side.
13 minutes into the middle frame, shots were 7-0 for the Moose with all the action in the period in the Edmonton end. The Road Runners finally registered a shot with just less than seven minutes to play.
Edmonton looked to make even the game up just as their powerplay expired. Toby Petersen broke in on a two-on-none but lost control of the puck. He tried to spin around and backhand it on Auld but the Moose netminder made the save.
Shots were 9-5 in the second period, 18-14 overall as the Moose carried a 2-1 lead into the third.
Edmonton evened it at 2-2 in the third. Eric Beaudoin put home a rebound off a Mike Bishai shot to tie it for the Road Runners.
Sarno had the puck in the slot in the latter half of the third but his wrister narrowly missed the mark. On the same shift, Josh Green had the puck right at the top of the crease but couldn't jam it in.
Following regulation time, the shot count was 26-20 in favour of the Moose.
The Moose had the first good chance in the extra frame. Peter Sarno tried to slip the puck through Moss's pads but the Edmonton netminder was able to keep it out.
Midway through the overtime period Jason King broke into the Edmonton zone, split the defence and scored five-hole on Moss to seal the victory.
