Utah Grizzlies News Release
ROCHESTER, NEW YORK - The road blues continued to play for Utah in Rochester on Friday night as they fell 4-1 to the Amerks after a three-goal third period for Rochester. Jason Pominville finished with the game-winning goal and an assist and former Grizzly legend Chris Taylor finished with a shorthanded goal and a helper in route to the Amerks fourth straight victory. For Utah it was their seventh straight loss and a franchise record eighth straight road loss.
Neither team lit the lamp in the first period with Rochester owning an 18-6 shot advantage but David LeNeveu was solid making several flashy saves including robbing Jason Pominville towards the end of the first period. The Amerks squandered a couple of power plays, while Utah missed on their only chance.
In the second period, the Grizzlies scored at the 5:15 mark on the power play with Kiel McLeod jamming a rebound past goaltender Ryan Miller for his fifth goal of the season assisted by Keith Ballard and Terry Virtue. The man advantage goal was Utah's first in 24 chances on their current road trip and the first for Utah since December 22nd. Later in the frame while on the power play again, Milan Bartovic poked the puck around Peter Metcalf at the near point creating a two-on-one shorthanded chance for the Amerks that Chris Taylor finished on with LeNeveu making a great save on Taylor's initial shot but the rebound caromed off LeNeveu stick across the goal line tying the game at one goal apiece. It was the sixth shorthanded goal allowed by Utah this season and the third scored by the Amerks.
Rochester took advantage of a couple of Grizzlies turnovers in the third period scoring two goals and capping the frame off with an empty net goal. Jason Pominville took advantage of a failed clearing attempt by Utah with a one-timer off a pass from Taylor for his 14th goal of the season. Taylor and Doug Janik had the assists. Thomas Vanek added to the Amerks one-goal lead with his 16th goal of the season on a rebound off a wrap-around shot. Pominville drew the only assist. Chris Thorburn scored an empty-net goal finishing the game off for Rochester. The Amerks outshot the Grizzlies 15-7 in the period and finished with a 44-23 game lead.
LeNeveu made 40 saves in the game falling to 5-15-1 (he is now 1-6-1 in his last eight decisions). Miller wins his 20th game and improves to 8-1 in his last nine decision.
The Grizzlies will square off against the Amerks again on Sunday at the Blue Cross Arena. Face-off is scheduled for 4:05 PM (mt).
