January 14, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release

The Providence Bruins announced today that they have released defenseman Jay Leach from his professional tryout contract and signed him to an American Hockey League contract for the remainder of the 2004-05 season. Leach, 25, has 2-2-4 totals and 29 PIM in 21 games since originally being signed on November 26. He began the season with the Trenton Titans (ECHL), notching two assists and 17 PIM in 10 games.

"Jay has been a welcome addition to our team, and since he has been here, has earned a spot," said Bruins head coach Scott Gordon. "He has developed into a very steady, reliable defenseman, and has become a mainstay for our club."

Leach, now playing in his fourth professional season out of Providence College, played three games last season with the Bruins. He also played 23 AHL games with Bridgeport, and 31 in the ECHL with Trenton, and another three with the Long Beach Ice Dogs. In 56 career AHL games with Providence, Bridgeport and the Springfield Falcons, Leach has 2-3-5 totals and 66 PIM. He has 15-43-58 totals and 427 PIM in 245 career professional games in the AHL and ECHL.

Leach, a 6'4", 225-pound native of Syracuse, New York, played at Providence College from 1997-2001, tallying 6-46-52 totals and 276 PIM in 142 games. He was originally selected by the Phoenix Coyotes with their fifth pick (fifth round), 115th overall, in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. He is the nephew of former NHL player and Boston Bruin Steve Leach.

The Bruins return home to host the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Friday, January 14 at 7:05 p.m. and the Worcester IceCats on Sunday, January 16 at 4:05 p.m. The first 4,000 fans in attendance on Friday will receive a free Providence Bruins hat, courtesy of the Rhode Island Lottery and WPRI CBS-12.

History will be made in Providence on Friday, as the Bruins become just the 11th team in the 69-year history of the American Hockey League to play 1,000 games.
