Portland Pirates News Release
PORTLAND, ME - Portland Pirates Head Coach Tim Army announced today that the Pirates will practice outdoors behind the Scarborough Intermediate School on January 18, 2005. The practice, subject to change due to the weather, is scheduled to take place from 10:00 a.m.-11:00a.m. This is third year that the team has arranged an outdoor practice. The popular event is an opportunity for kids at the Scarborough schools as well as other Pirates fans to come watch the Pirates scrimmage outdoors, the way it used to be.
Before the scrimmage, the players will conduct their own draft to select their teammates for the competition. The two teams will then play two half hour games.
"It is a long year and we try to mix things up during the course of the year to keep everybody fresh mentally. What we want to do for this practice is to go outside, do something a bit differently, and have some fun with it. We have a couple of mini games where we have the players pick their own teams, they have a draft and they have some good laughs over that and then they go out and play and they compete and they have some fun in an environment where we all grew up playing. That is the ultimate goal behind it is for guys to remember what it was like when they were small boys playing on ponds or back yard rinks and how much they enjoyed playing and the passion they had for the game. It is a subtle reminder of those days and the joy that we all have in playing the great game of hockey," said Head Coach Tim Army.
After the practice, the Pirates will present their third "Goals For Success" program of the year sponsored by Healthy Maine Partnerships and Pepsi at the Scarborough Middle School. Pirates players Louis Robitaille and Justin Eddy, along with broadcaster Greg Glynn will speak to the students from 1:00p.m.-2:00 p.m. about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle by eating the right foods and saying no to drugs, tobacco, and alcohol. The players will also share their own personal experiences about growing up, playing hockey, and living away from home. The hour-long presentation will include questions from the students at the end of the presentation all the students will receive a free ticket voucher good for an upcoming Pirates game.
