Fibiger ends wild game with overtime goal
January 14, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON - Binghamton let a two-goal lead slip away and it nearly cost them a point in the East Division standings on Friday night, but the Sens prevailed as they escaped with a 4-3 overtime victory on home ice against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
The win marked the club's sixth straight win on home ice, tying the franchise record set last season.
The teams swapped power-play goals in the first period and the score would stay knotted 1-1 until Brandon Bochenski's power-play marker 5:21 into the third period.
Brian McGrattan then picked up his fourth goal of the year and gave the Sens a 3-1 lead at the 10:36 mark of the third period.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was not ready to pack it in quite yet however as they were able to close the gap to 3-2 with a Rob Scuderi goal 12:05 into the third.
Ramzi Abid's second goal of the game with just two seconds left in regulation tied the game 3-3 and sent it into overtime with the Penguins steamrolling with momentum.
But Jesse Fibiger ended the Penguins hopes of winning the game when he picked up his second goal of the season 1:35 into overtime. Denis Hamel and Brian Pothier picked up the assists on the game winner.
Billy Thompson earned the win for Binghamton as he stopped 33 of 36 shots while the Penguin's Andy Chiodo took the loss and made 16 stops on 20 shots. Thompson has now won six straight games with the victory, setting a new franchise record. His last loss came more than a month ago on Dec. 11 when the Albany River Rats defeated the Senators 3-2.
Binghamton's power-play continued to dismantle their opposition scoring twice on four opportunities tonight while the penalty kill squad held the Penguins to one goal on six chances. Binghamton has now successfully killed 27 of their last 28 penalties.
The Sens are in action on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. when they welcome a Rochester Americans team to town that has won nine of their last ten contests. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling the Sens' Hotline at 722-SENS or by visiting the Sens' executive office located on the third floor of the arena.
