Grizzlies Homer Their Way Past Otters 7-5

Evansville, IN - Nearly 5,000 people came out to Bosse Field Friday night to see the Otters break their seven game losing streak and to see fireworks after the game.

They got the latter; the former will have to wait.

The Otters couldn't overcome three home runs by the Gateway Grizzlies, falling 7-5 Friday night in game two of a three game series.

The Otters got on the board first thanks to Frank Meade's solo home run leading off the second inning. The homer, Meade's team leading eleventh of the season, broke a 0-for-19 drought for the slugger. The Otters would push another run across in the second when Kevin Mackey reached on an error and advanced to third base on Andre Liscinsky's first double of the year. Mackey then scored on Javier Brown's groundout to first base.

The Grizzlies did their damage in the fourth inning, with Charlie Lisk leading off with his Frontier League-leading 19th home run. After Danny Morrow doubled and Jareck West reached on an infield single, Joe Agreste launched a three-run home run to right-centerfield, eclipsing the Otters lead and giving the Grizzlies a 4-2 advantage. Gateway wasn't done with the longball though, as two batters later Brandon Peters hit his sixth homer of the year for a 6-2 lead.

The Otters wasted no time getting back into the game. Gateway starter Paige Dumont hit Meade and Reece Gorman with pitches to begin the bottom of the fourth inning. He then walked Mackey to load the bases with no one out. Andre Liscinsnky hit a routing groundball to second base, but Alex Kerins misplayed it, and the ball rolled into right field, allowing two runs to score. The Otters added another run when Javier Brown grounded into a double play with runners on first and third and no one out. At the end of the fourth inning, the Otters trailed 6-5.

The score would remain unchanged going into the ninth inning. With two outs, Gateway right fielder Stephen Holdren doubled off of Otters closer Justin Smith. Holdren advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on Smith's third wild pitch of the year, giving the Otters a 7-5 deficit to combat in the bottom of the ninth.

Cameron Satterwhite's pinch-hit, one out single brought the tying run to the plate, but Eric Blackwell struck out and Luke Hetherington was robbed of a base hit on a sliding catch by centerfielder Jareck West to end the game.

Otters' starter Kai Tuomi fell to 1-5, allowing five earned runs in five innings, including the three home runs given up in the fourth inning. In Tuomi's last 20.2 innings pitched, he has surrendered 10 home runs.

Dumont advanced to 4-1, giving up four earned runs in five innings. Joel Boeschen worked the ninth inning for his fourth save.

Evansville has now lost eight in a row, tying a season high. The Otters (16-40) will attempt to avoid the sweep Saturday at 7:05pm CDT.
