Grizzlies Home Opener Tonight

October 18, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Utah Grizzlies News Release

The Grizzlies play their home opener tonight when they host the San Antonio Rampage. Both teams will be looking for their first win of the season as Utah dropped a pair of games last weekend to the Houston Aeros and San Antonio lost a 6-2 decision in Milwaukee.

The Grizzlies had some bright spots in the two-game set in Houston namely the goaltenders, Corey Hirsch and Jason Bacashihua, who combined for a save percentage of close to 95%. Steve Ott scored his first AHL goal last weekend, while John Erskine (one goal, one assist) and Jim Montgomery (two assists) each tallied two points.

The Rampage are playing in their inaugural season in the AHL. Serving as the Florida Panthers top NHL affiliate, San Antonio is now the home for several former Grizzlies including goaltender Wade Flaherty (won 22 games with Utah last season). Other former Grizzlies on San Antonio's roster include Ryan Jardine, Serge Payer, Paul Elliott and Kyle Rossiter.

The teams will square off eight times this season with game two scheduled for tomorrow night in the E-Center.

Team Notes: Eric Chouinard will make his debut tonight for the Grizz after missing the first two games in Houston. Brett Draney and Steve Gainey will both miss tonight's game with facial injuries. Marcus Kristoffersson is doubtful for this weekend's games.

Next Game: The Grizzlies and Rampage will meet again tomorrow night at the E-Center. Face-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
