LONDON, ONTARIO, CANADA - After a three hour rain delay prior to the game, the Gateway Grizzlies scored early and often in an 11-1 convincing win over the London Rippers Sunday. The win was the Grizzlies second in a row and gave them the series victory.
John Shelby hit a first-inning homer to put the Grizzlies ahead 1-0. Gateway (4-5) piled on four more runs in the second to make it 5-0. After a Sam Mahoney RBI single, rookie Richie Jimenez Jr. ripped a three-run homer for his first professional home run and first professional RBI.
Chris McClendon drove in two runs with a double in the fifth to give the Grizzlies a 7-1 lead.
Jon Myers knocked a solo homer to right-center as part of a three-run eighth. Jonathan Johnson had an RBI double and Antone DeJesus picked up a sacrifice fly to give the Grizzlies a 10-1 lead.
McClendon capped off the Grizzlies scoring with a solo homer to dead center in the ninth inning.
Grizzlies starter Jonathan Gonzalez (1-0) had his second straight quality start. Gonzalez went seven innings, giving up just one run on three hits. He struck out five and walked three.
Johnson, McClendon and Meyers had two hits while Mahoney paced the Grizzlies attack with three hits. McClendon and Jimenez both drove in three runs.
The Grizzlies finished their road trip with a 2-4 record and will take their 4-5 overall record into a six-game homestand at GCS Ballpark that begins Tuesday, May 29th.
The Grizzlies open up their homestand with a three-game series against the Evansville Otters. Left-hander Zach Robertson will get the start on Tuesday night for Gateway. First pitch is set for 7:05 CT.
