Joliet Slammers News Release
(Joliet, IL) - The Evansville Otters stopped the Slammers short of their first sweep on Sunday afternoon in a 3-2 loss for Joliet.
After two scoreless innings, Steven Garcia led off the third for Evansville by doubling, and reached third on a wild pitch. Andrew Kuhn then struck out, and Matt Sheely brought Garcia in on an infield groundout.
Joliet tied it up in the home half when Trey Manz doubled and eventually reached third, but Ben Hewett came in to pinch run after Manz's leg cramped up. Hewett scored on a Jimmy Waters double play.
With the game tied, the Slammers pulled ahead in the fourth. With Brad Netzel on third after a double and a ground ball from Erik Lis, Hector Pellot brought him home on a 6-3 groundout.
Evansville tied it up nearly immediately afterward when designated hitter Brett Chamberlin launched a solo home run with one out to make it 2-2.
The Otters took the lead again in the eighth inning. Zach Mandelblatt dropped a fly ball in right field, allowing Garcia to advance to second, and Sheely singled to give Evansville the 3-2 lead.
For the second straight night, the Slammers started a pitcher who had just joined the roster. Michael Perconte gave up two runs through six innings while striking out four and walking one, and Geoff Brown and Brian Smith went the rest of the way.
Joliet gets an off-day Monday following the six-game home stand, and will hit the road to face the Lake Eerie Crushers in a three-game series before returning to Silver Cross Field on Friday to play the Washington Wild Things. Fans can catch the action live on AM 1340 WJOL, and streaming live online at www.wjol.com, with Aaron Morse calling the action.
