Washington Wild Things News Release

WASHINGTON, PA - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, fell to the River City Rascals in the finale of a three game set by a score of 4-3 in 10 innings on Sunday Night.

The Wild Things concluded the homestand at 3-3.

Nathan Striz took the loss for the Wild Things (5-4), while Brandon Cunniff earned the win for the Rascals (8-1).

Casey Barnes settled in after giving up two runs in the first two innings, eventually retiring nine in a row, many of them coming via the ground ball. The righty went seven strong innings, giving up two runs (one earned)on four hits while striking out six. He threw 116 pitches on the evening.

For the second straight start, Barnes pitched well but would earn no decision.

Washington tallied eleven hits in the contest, a season high, surpassing the previous high of seven hits against Gateway on Thursday, May 24.

River City struck for the game's first run just two batters in, on a home run from Jeremy Synan to right field.

The Wild Things would get that run back in the bottom half after a great piece of hitting by Michael Mooney on a hit-and-run. Mooney slapped the offering from Don Lisi through the hole on the left side where the shortstop had just vacated, to put runners at first and third.

Matt McConnell followed with a bunt single to score Garvey from third.

River City answered right back after a fielding error allowed Chris Andreas, who doubled to left field to open the inning, to cross the plate.

In the third for Washington, after back-to-back singles to start off the inning, Doug Thennis slapped the 1-2 offering from Lisi again to the hole on the left side. River City shortstop Bobby Burk had no play at first as he moved to his left, and then threw home. The throw, which was off target, allowed Mooney to slide home safely to pull the score even at 2-2.

The Wild Things kept clawing, and eventually earned their first lead of the series.

Robbie Garvey reached second on a bloop double to no-mans land in left with one out in the fourth. Two batters later, the Wild Things, taking advantage of River City shortstop Burk once again, took a 3-2 lead.

Both teams then traded zeros until the top of the eighth, where Gerardo Avila took the first pitch he saw from Nathan Striz deep to left to lead off the inning and knot the game at three.

The Wild Things had an opportunity to win for the second time in walk-off fashion during the homestand with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't push across the go-ahead run.

In the tenth inning, the Rascals pulled ahead for good.

With one out, Gerardo Avilla reached on a broken bat, infield single to the pitcher. Two batters later, on a 1-0 count, Chris Andreas tripled to left-center and scored Avila from first.

The Wild Things would go in order in the bottom half to end it.

Next up for the Washington after an off-day on Monday, is a trip to Windy City and Joliet before returning home to host Southern Illinois on June 5.
