
Evansville Otters Claw Back for 3-2 Win at Joliet

(JOLIET, Illinois) endash The Evansville Otters fought back in the late innings on Sunday to beat the Joliet Slammers 3-2 and avoid a sweep at Silver Cross Field.
Designated hitter Brett Chamberlain his hit first professional home run and pitcher Bryce Morrow gave up just three hits in seven innings pitched for the win.
In the early part of the game, both teams were scoring runs solely on groundballs. A Matt Sheely RBI groundout propeled Evansville to a 1-0 lead in the third, and a Jimmy Waters double play in the bottom half scored another run in the 1-1 tie.
Infielder Hector Pellot brought another run home in the 4th inning on a groundball to short and Chamberlain's blast in the fifth inning even the score again.
The game would stay 2-2 until the 8th inning when Evansville capitalized on a leadoff two base error from right fielder Zach Mendelblatt. Matt Sheely would strike again two batters later, lining the go-ahead RBI single past a drawn in infield for the 3-2 lead.
Reliever Tyree Hayes stranded a pair of runners in the bottom of the 8th and closer Eric Massingham threw a scoreless 9th inning to secure the Evansville Otters win.
Evansville improves to 4-5 with the victory as Joliet drops to 4-6 following the loss.
Bryce Morrow improves to 2-0 with the win. The right-hander threw just 68 pitches, allowing two runs on three hits. The loss goes to reliever Geoff Brown who surrendered an unearned run in 1 1/3 innings. His record stands at 0-1. Closer Eric Massingham collected his second save of the season for the Otters and 24th of his career, tying Kyle May for 3rd place in Evansville franchise history.
Evansville is off on Memorial Day but will continue their nine-game road trip on Tuesday with the beginning of a three game series at the Gateway Grizzlies. First pitch is set for 7:05 from GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois.
