Grizzlies Fall in Series Opener against Miners

SAUGET, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners picked up a 5-3 win Friday night against the Gateway Grizzlies in the opener of a three-game series at GCS Ballpark.

The loss was the just the Grizzlies (33-17) seventh loss at home in 29 home games and cut their lead in the West Division to two games over River City.

With single runs in the first and second innings, Gateway led early 2-0. Niko Vasquez drove in a run on a double in the first and Ben Waldrip hit a towering solo home run to right field in the second for his sixth of the season.

Southern Illinois (27-22) put up four runs on four hits in the fourth inning against Gateway starting pitcher Tyler Thompson (3-1) to take a 4-2 lead. Aaron Gates began the scoring with a three-run home run and Matt Jones brought in a run on a fielder's choice.

Southern Illinois added another run in the fifth inning to take a 5-2 lead.

Thompson took the loss, yielding five runs (three earned) on six hits in seven innings. The right-hander from Cuba, Mo. struck out five and walked two while suffering his first professional loss.

Tommy Richards helped the Grizzlies add a run in the sixth inning on an RBI single, but Gateway couldn't pull any closer in the loss.

The Grizzlies and Miners play game two of their three game series Saturday night at GCS Ballpark. Left-hander Kerry Kelley (2-1) gets the start for the Grizzlies at 7:05.
