Grizzlies Power Past Aviators and Win Series in Rockford

LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Gateway Grizzlies scored 11 runs in the first two innings Thursday night and held on for a 14-9 victory against Rockford at Aviators Stadium.

The win gave the Grizzlies their 11th series win of the season and helped them maintain their three game lead over River City in the West Division.

Gateway (33-16) collected 15 hits as a team with five players picking up two hits or more. Michael Wing and Niko Vasquez both had three hits. Wings went 3-for-4 with five runs batted in and three runs scored.

With six runs in the first inning and five more in the second inning, Gateway took an early 11-0 lead.

Vasquez, Wing and Richard Seigel all picked up first inning RBI singles while Tommy Richards brought in a run on a fielder's choice and TJ Bennett capped off the big first inning with a two-run double.

The Grizzlies powered their way to five more runs in the second inning. Wing belted a grand slam home run and Richards drilled a solo home run.

Rockford (21-25) closed the gap with a six-run second inning against Gateway starting pitcher Aaron Newcomb.

Newcomb allowed six runs on six hits and three walks in one and two thirds innings.

Gateway added a run in the fourth inning on a Ben Waldrip RBI groundout and Rockford answered with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth.

Vasquez and Hernandez picked up back-to-back RBI doubles in the seventh inning to give Gateway a 14-7 lead.

Grizzlies reliever Chris DeBoo (3-0) got the win after allowing just one unearned run in three and a third innings.

The Grizzlies head home Friday night to start a three-game series against the Southern Illinois Miners. First pitch is set for 7:05.
