Slammers Trounce Boomers 14-3 on Friday

The Joliet Slammers-Presented by ATI Physical Therapy- scored early and often in defeating Schaumburg 14-3 on Friday.

The Slammers took control of this game in the 2nd inning when they sent 11 men to the plate and scored 7 runs. Grant DeBruin had two doubles in the inning and extends his hitting streak to 14 straight games. Blair Walters pitched another fine ballgame to earn the win. He went 8 innings and allowed three runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

With a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday, Hunter Ackerman stayed in the game for Schaumburg until the top of the 7th and allowed 12 runs on 14 hits to help spare the bullpen. Joliet batted around twice in the game with 10 men batting in the 7th as well. DeBruin finished with three hits on the day, as did Jose Garcia. Seth Granger ended with four singles, while Russell Moldenhauer had two hits and 3 RBI. Adam Lewis drove in a pair of runs and Chris Epps contributed a sacrifice fly and reached base three times. Adam Giacalone added a 2-run double, while newcomer Jake Gronsky had two hits and two RBI in his professional debut. Gronsky was signed out of Monmouth University before the game. Other roster moves on Friday included the release of pitcher Travis Reboulet and a trade involving Marquis Riley. Riley was sent to Southern Illinois in return for starting pitcher Matt Crim and reliever David Kubiak. Crim will be the Joliet starter in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. The 14 runs and 17 hits are both season best numbers for the Slammers in 2014.

The Slammers and Boomers play a 5pm doubleheader on Saturday before wrapping things up on Sunday at 1pm. The All-Star Break then begins as Joliet will host the Dutch National Women's Fastpitch Softball team in an exhibition game on Monday July 14 at 7pm at Silver Cross Field. Slammers action this summer will be broadcast live on 1340 WJOL and wjol.com and the audio/video feed of home games this season can be seen at independentprofessionalbaseball.com.
