Big Late Innings Lead CornBelters to Win

Traverse City, Mich. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, came from behind with a big seventh inning and captured a 6-1 win over the Traverse City Beach Bums on Friday night at Wuerfel Park.

The Beach Bums struck with the first score of the game in the first inning, when the first two hitters singled and Jovan Rosa sent a two-out RBI single to left field.

The CornBelters evened the score in the sixth inning when Santiago Chirino led off with a double, went to third on a fielder's choice and scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Sam Judah.

The Belters grabbed a 2-1 lead in the seventh with a home run to right by Ozney Guillen, and continued the rally by loading the bases on a hit, an error and a walk. Mike Schwartz then cleared the bases with a single to right field that was misplayed, sending Schwartz to third and giving Normal a 5-1 lead. Pat McKenna led off the ninth with a home run to left to give the Belters insurance and a 6-1 advantage.

Matt Packer (1-0) earned the win with seven innings of work, giving up only his second run and first earned run in his third start combined with seven hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Ian MacDougall (2-3) took the loss.

The series continues Saturday at Wuerfel Park with a 6:05 p.m. Central first pitch as CornBelters right-hander Bobby Shore (3-2, 4.67 ERA) matches up against Beach Bums lefty Brandon Rohde (3-0, 3.28). Pre-game begins at 5:50 at www.normalbaseball.com . The Belters return home next Friday, July 18 after the Frontier League All-Star break to begin a nine-game homestand.
