Utah Grizzlies News Release

WEST VALLEY CITY, UT - Home ice continued to be an advantage for the Grizzlies as they defeated the Houston Aeros 2-1 in a shootout. The win is Utah's fourth in their last six home games and makes them 4-1-0-1 in their last six games at the 'E' Center.

The teams played a spirited opening period with Utah outshooting the Aeros 13-9 but both goaltenders, Jamie Storr for Utah and Mike Smith for Houston, were sharp. Surprisingly for two teams that combined for 407 penalty minutes in the three previous meetings, there was no penalties called.

In the second period, Utah broke the scoreless tie on a delayed penalty call with Fredrik Sjostom going coast-to-coast burying a shot from just inside the blueline under the crossbar for his ninth goal of the season and first since December 22nd. Joe Callahan and Peter White drew the assists. Houston outshot the Grizzlies 17-9 but Storr remained perfect stopping everything in sight.

Houston tied the game in the third period with a similar goal to Utah's with Stephane Veilleux going coast-to-coast with a delayed penalty call upcoming and snapping a shot off the post past Storr for his 15th goal of the season assisted by Ray Giroux and Marc Cavosie at the 5:18 mark of the frame. Houston outshot the Grizzlies 36-30 through regulation.

The game headed to overtime where neither team scored but in the shootout Utah and Houston each scored twice in the first four rounds taking the game to a sixth round and Erik Westrum with a chance to win the game for Utah took advantage beating Mike Smith for the game deciding goal.

Utah will host the Houston Aeros again on Wednesday night with face-off scheduled for 7:05 PM.
