February 25, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Houston Aeros News Release
Five things you need to know
· The Aeros, who lead the league on the penalty kill at 89.5 percent, have killed off 46-of-48 (95.8 percent) of their shorthanded chances over the last 13 games and 18 straight overall. Houston is plus-23 in PPG ratio, second best in the league. Chicago has scored the last two PPG versus Houston. Not counting those two games, no one has scored on the man advantage in 35 attempts, dating back to Grand Rapids' PPG 1/23, more than a month ago. The AHL record for penalty kill percentage is an eye-popping 90.7, set last season by Bridgeport, which also established a new mark by allowing only 31 PPG. Houston has yielded 24 through 52 games. The Aeros will get a test tonight against Cincinnati's power play unit, which has hit on 6-of-23 (26.1 percent) of its chances over its last two games. The Mighty Ducks have gone on a whopping 48 power plays over their last five games.
· There's a distinct possibility that goals will be at a premium tonight. Cincinnati's Frederic Cassivi posted his third straight shutout Wednesday against Philadelphia, extending his shutout sequence to 181:03, surpassing the previous club record of 142:39 by Ilya Brzygalov. Houston, meanwhile, is coming off a new franchise-record eighth shutout of the season, as Josh Harding (31 saves in 59:29) and Mike Smith (one save in 31 seconds) combined to blank Utah on Wednesday. The Aeros haven't allowed a non shootout goal in 95 minutes, 18 seconds dating back to Monday. Houston has yielded just three non shootout goals in its last three games.
· Houston is playing game three of a stretch of seven straight games against teams with lower winning percentages than it has. The Aeros just wrapped up a run where they played Milwaukee and Chicago - the top two teams in the division - in nine of 11 games. The Aeros played 16 of their first 50 games against the Admirals and Wolves, while playing only 13 games versus the remainder of the division.
· There will soon be a new all-time Aeros leader in goals since 2001-02, when the team joined the AHL. Kyle Wanvig's 50 goals have tied Cory Larose for the top spot on the list, while Stephane Veilleux is just one off the pace with 49. Veilleux, meanwhile, is tied with Larose and Travis Roche at 120 points for the top spot on the Aeros AHL points list. The trio is tied for 10th place on the team's all-time list, counting IHL totals.
· Houston has allowed 35 third-period goals, tied with Rochester for the fewest in the league. The Aeros are 1-9-2-1 in their last 13 games when allowing a third-period goal, but they've won their last five when not yielding a goal in the third. In its 25 wins, Houston has allowed just 10 third-period goals, but in the remainder of its 27 games, it has yielded 25.
Aeros at Ducks (Aeros are 8-4-4-1 overall, Aeros are 3-3-1-1 at Cincinnati)
· The Aeros went 2-3-3-0 in the 2003-04 regular season against Cincinnati, and the Ducks swept the Aeros in two games in Houston in the West Division Qualifying Round.
· Houston's 3-1 home opening win over the Ducks in the last meeting 10/16 snapped its five-game winless streak (0-2-3-0) against Cincinnati. Counting the post-season, the Aeros were winless in seven straight meetings prior to that game.
· The teams have played six overtime games in 19 chances, including three of their final five games in 2003-04. Houston is 1-1-4 in overtime versus Cincinnati.
· Houston is 0-1-1-0 in its last two trips to Cincinnati Gardens, last winning there 12/20/03, by a 3-1 count.
