January 31, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Utah Grizzlies News Release

West Valley City - The Utah Grizzlies blanked the Grand Rapids Griffins for the second time this season with a 1-0 decision Friday at the 'E' Center in front of 7,122. The game winner came shorthanded when Tim Wedderburn created the turnover and assisted Rob Valicevic. Mike Smith earned his second shutout of the season with 24 saves. The Grizzlies, who ended a five game winning drought, are the first team to beat the Griffins since January 3.

After a scoreless first period, Utah (15-25-4-3) took the second period lead when Tim Wedderburn picked up a turnover close to the Griffin's net. Rob Valicevic picked up the turnover and had just enough time to sneak the puck behind Griffins netminder Marc Lamothe registering his 4th goal of the season at 12:03 of the second.

The Griffins (27-13-8-0), who lead the AHL in points, are now 1-2-1-0 against Utah in the four games they've played this season. Griffin's goaltender Marc Lamothe finished with 17 saves. The Griffins outshot the Grizzlies 24-18.

The Grizzlies will meet the Griffins again Saturday night at the 'E' Center to complete the two-game series. Face-off is scheduled for 7:05 pm (mst).
