Binghamton Senators News Release
Brooks Laich's goal streak reached three games while Charlie Stephen, Julien Vauclair, and Steve Bancroft had three-point nights to lead the Binghamton Senators to a 6-0 win over the Albany River Rats Friday night at Pepsi Arena in front of 3,402 fans.
Laich extended his streak with his 12th goal of the year with 49.8 seconds to go in the middle period gave Binghamton a 3-0.
After Alexandre Giroux stickhandled through through the Rats defense and dropped a pass for the trailing Laich. After fanning on his first shot, Laich banged in his own rebound. Giroux extended his point streak to three games as he picked the only assist.
The Sens opened the scoring just 73 seconds into the contest while working the power play.
Denis Hamel spun around in the right circle and snapped home an Arpad Mihaly centering feed over the glove hand of Rats goaltender Ari Ahonen (18 saves) for a 1-0 lead at 1:13.
Julien Vauclair also drew an assist on Hamel's team-leading 20th goal of the season, Hamel's second consecutive 20-goal campaign in the American League (27 in 48 games with Rochester).
Charlie Stephens made it 2-0 with a highlight reel goal at 7:23 of the first when he split the Albany defense, and as he was hooked to the ice, snapped a low drive past Ahonen for his second goal with the Sens and his seventh overall.
Giroux and Andy Hedlund set up Stephens' rush to pick up the assists.
The Sens salted the game away with three strikes in a penalty-littered third period, with Stephens netting his second of the night and a pair of markers from defenseman Steve Bancroft.
Ray Emery picked up his 14th win of the year and stopped all 22 Albany shots, but shared the shutout with Billy Thompson, who played the final 4:08after Emery was ejected on a third man in call.
With the victory, Binghamton has now won three straight contests and moved into fourth place in the East Division, jumping over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, who lost 3-1 in Hershey. The Sens and Pens faceoff Saturday 7:05 p.m. at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
