Griffins Special Teams Treat 3-2 Win

CINCINNATI - The Grand Rapids Griffins (6-2-1-0) used power play and shorthanded goals from Mark Mowers to down the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks (3-4-1-0) by a 3-2 score in regulation on Friday night at Cincinnati Gardens. The Griffins are unbeaten in their last three outings, sporting a 2-0-1-0 mark.

Joey MacDonald earned his third win, all away from Van Andel Arena, making 32 saves to boost his record to 3-0-0 on the season. In his second season in Grand Rapids, MacDonald is 14-2-0 in road contests. He played an integral role in keeping the Ducks scoreless on all six of their power plays, while the Griffins capitalized on one of their four opportunities.

At 7:04 of the opening period, Mowers picked a Duck defenseman's pocket, used a backhand-forehand move to beat the Cincinnati netminder, Ilya Bryzgalov, for an unassisted shorthanded tally.

The home team responded with a goal from the doorstep of the Griffins net by Pierre Parenteau from Keith Aucoin and Todd Reirden at 8:06 of the first period, evening the score 1-1.

The Griffins regained a one-goal lead when Ryan Barnes chipped a pass into the Ducks' goalmouth, it eventually dropped in front of Darryl Bootland who promptly knocked into the cage at 18:18, for his fourth marker of the campaign.

The Ducks recorded the only goal of the middle frame when Michael Holmqvist notched a shorthanded goal from Joel Perrault and Chris Armstrong at 6:59, knotting the score at 2-2.

Grand Rapids took a 3-2 lead when Mowers capped a goalmouth scramble with a power play tally, his fourth goal in two games and seventh of the season, from Jeff Nelson and Travis Richards at 6:29 of the third period.

Bryzgalov made 16 saves in a losing effort.

The Griffins travel to the Windy City to play the Chicago Wolves at the Allstate Arena on Saturday night at 8 p.m.
