LOOKING AHEAD:
After a nine-game road trip to start the year, the Toronto Roadrunners finally open the doors to the Ricoh Coliseum this weekend, hosting Rochester on Saturday (4:00 ET) and the St. John's Maple Leafs on Sunday (2:00 ET, 3:30 NT). The Amerks have already beaten the Roadrunners twice this year, with Ryan Miller stopping 60 of 61 shots in the two victories. Sunday's game, to be televised across Canada on Rogers Sportsnet, is the first of 12 much-anticipated tilts between Toronto and St. John's, which enters the weekend unbeaten in its last three outings. The Roadrunners, winless in their last four, earned a 3-3 tie in Grand Rapids on Wednesday.
The only AHL team without a regulation loss this season, Hartford (5-0-2-1) tries to scare up another win against Providence in a Halloween night clash in Connecticut's capital. The Wolf Pack lead the league in team defense, allowing just 11 goals in eight games this season thanks largely to the solid play of 23-year-old Jason LaBarbera between the pipes and the arrival of rookie defenseman Fedor Tyutin on the blue line. The Bruins have shown a net gain this year themselves in 19-year-old Hannu Toivonen, who is 3-0-0 to begin his pro career.
For the first time since Hartford met Providence during the 2000-01 season, the last two Calder Cup champions face off against each other when Houston hosts Chicago on Friday (7:00 CT). The Aeros have sputtered to a 2-3-0-0 start, but are coming off a 5-1 win over Cleveland on Tuesday that featured Kyle Wanvig's first career hat trick. The Wolves are 5-1-0-1 after Cincinnati rallied for a 3-2 win on Wednesday, wasting goals by Chicago rookies Brian Maloney and Karl Stewart and a 37-save effort by Frederic Cassivi. This is the fourth game on a seven-game homestand for the Aeros at the new Toyota Center.
