State College Spikes News Release
(STATE COLLEGE, PA) - The State College Spikes had two players named to the National League affiliates' roster for the 2011 New York-Penn League All-Star Game, which was announced Monday by the league and the host Lowell Spinners. Catcher Samuel Gonzalez and outfielder Carlos Mesa were each named to the NL team, although Mesa will be unable to play in the game due to injury.
The NYPL's Midsummer Classic will be held on Tuesday, August 16 at Edward LeLacheur Park in Lowell, marking the first time the game has been held in Massachusetts. Gonzalez will join his National League teammates in facing the All-Stars from the league's American League-affiliated clubs in the seventh annual showcase for baseball's future stars.
Gonzalez earned his All-Star berth after hitting .319 to place eighth in the New York-Penn League in batting average through Sunday's games. The Spikes catcher has also produced five doubles, two triples, one home run and 13 runs batted in over the first 34 games he has played. Gonzalez has caught 25 of the Spikes' 50 team games through Sunday.
Mesa, who is currently on the Disabled List, found a hot streak with the Spikes after defecting from Cuba to sign with the Pirates organization this spring. The 23-year-old hit .345 with two home runs, six doubles and six runs batted in 16 games during the month of July. Overall, Mesa is hitting .287 this season (through Monday's games), with two home runs and nine RBI.
The Spikes return home to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park to start a six-game homestand on Tuesday, when they face the Aberdeen IronBirds (Baltimore Orioles) at 7:05 p.m. Tickets for Tuesday's game, as well as every Spikes regular season home game, are currently on sale through the Spikes Box Office by calling (814) 272-1711 or by visiting in person. Fans can also buy and print single-game tickets by visiting StateCollegeSpikes.com.
