Jamestown Jammers News Release
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. - Nothing went right for the Jamestown Jammers Monday night at Diethrick Park as the State College Spikes won, 14-1.
The Spikes pounded out 15 hits, while limiting the Jamestown attack to just four hits. The Jammers also made four errors to suffer their worst defeat of the season. Despite the loss, the Jammers (27-24) are just three games behind Auburn and Mahoning Valley for the division lead.
Marquise Cooper led the offense with a RBI double and a single. Nestor Castillo chipped in with a double, and Pedro Mendoza had the team's only other hit.
The Spikes scored three runs in the second inning to break the game open. Chris Lashmet hit a solo homer to left, Kirk Singer had a RBI single and a Josh Hodges throwing error accounted for the three runs.
In the third and sixth, the Spikes would tack on one run to extend the lead to five before pushing across four more runs in the seventh. Wes Freeman delivered the big hit in the inning with a two run double.
Jamestown avoided the shutout with a run in the eighth inning on back-to-back doubles by Castillo and Cooper; however, State College would respond with five more runs in the ninth inning. Alex Dickerson connected for a grand slam to cap the scoring. Matt Skirving paced the offense with three hits including a double, while Dickerson belted the slam and doubled. Singer and Freeman also chipped in with two hits apiece.
Ryan Hafner earned the win after tossing six shutout innings and giving up just two hits with four strikeouts, while Hodges took the loss to fall to 5-1 after giving up four earned in six innings.
The Jammers now head to Connecticut for three games before returning on Friday to take on the Lowell Spinners.
