
Velleggia's Big Night Powers 'Birds Past Renegades, 6-4

Aberdeen, MD - Joe Velleggia and the Aberdeen IronBirds beat the Hudson Valley Renegades 6-4, completing a two game sweep of the Renegades and extending the IronBirds' win streak to a season-high five games.
Hudson Valley got on the board in the top of the first. Juniel Querecuto hit a one out single and, after stealing second, scored when Cesar Guillen reached when Mychal Givens committed an error.
The Renegades took the 1-0 lead into the second. Raymond Church hit a one out double and scored a batter later on Brian Bryles' RBI single, making it 2-0 Hudson Valley.
Aberdeen got on the board in the bottom of the third. Wynston Sawyer reached on a Renegade error. Sawyer advanced all the way to third after a Connor Narron walk and an Austin Knight fly out. Dudley Leonora hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Sawyer and it was 2-1 Renegades after the second.
The IronBirds tied it in the third. Glynn Davis led off with a double. He advanced to third on a Sammie Starr bunt single and then scored when Givens reached on a fielder's choice.
The Renegades took the lead again in the fifth. Craige Lyerly hit a single and advanced all the way to third when Mike Wright's pickoff attempt got past Joe Velleggia at first. Querecuto hit an RBI single, giving Hudson Valley a 3-2 lead.
Aberdeen tied it again in the bottom of the inning. Givens hit a two out single and advanced to second on a Renegade error. Velleggia hit him home by roping a double down the left field line.
The IronBirds seized the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh. Kyle Hoppy led off with a double, followed by a Glynn Davis walk. Two batters later, Givens reached on yet another Renegade error and Hoppy scored on the play. Velleggia completed his big night with another double down the left field line, and it scored Davis and Givens, making it 6-3 IronBirds after seven.
Hudson Valley would score one in the ninth, making the final score 6-4.
Mickey Jannis gets saddled with the loss for the Renegades. He pitched an inning and a third, allowed one hit, two runs (earned), walking two and striking out one. For the IronBirds, Mike Wright pitched five innings, allowed six hits, three runs (one earned), walked two and struck out five. He did not factor into the decision. Jose Mota picked up the win in relief. He pitched four innings, allowed four hits, one (eanred) run, striking out three.
Aberdeen begins a three game set with the State College Spikes tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Parker Bridwell (2-4, 4.12) will get the ball for the IronBirds, while the Spikes will send Mike Jefferson (1-1, 5.70) to the hill.
