Auburn Doubledays News Release
Auburn, NY - On the heels of Sunday night's 7-0 shutout win of Mahoning Valley, the Auburn Doubledays looked to win the four-game series on a Monday night finale at Falcon Park. The hopes of a series win were dashed by the Scrappers in a 7-2 loss.
Auburn got on the board first, scoring a run in the third on an RBI groundout by Bryce Ortega, scoring Jeremy Mayo who had doubled earlier in the inning. Unfortunately, that was the only lead the Doubledays would have.
Mahoning Valley plated two runs off Auburn starter Taylor Hill in the fourth on an RBI double by Jake Lowery and RBI base-hit by Todd Hankins, scoring Lowery.
The Doubledays evened the score in the bottom half of the inning, using back-to-back doubles (one by Angelberth Montilla and the other by Carlos Alvarez) to knot the score at two.
From there, the Auburn offense went silent, putting just three men in scoring position in the next five innings and going 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position.
Mahoning Valley, on the other hand, was just getting started.
The Scrappers used a one out triple by Aaron Siliga to score a run in the fifth. Jake Lowery took a bases loaded walk in the seventh to add another, increasing the Mahoning Valley lead to 4-2.
Then came the eighth inning when things got out of control.
Mahoning Valley sent nine men to the plate in the eighth, plating three runs on an RBI double by Alex Lavisky, a passed ball, and an RBI single by Bryson Myles to blow the game open to a 7-2 score.
The Doubledays could never recover as they wound up losing the game, 7-2.
Offensively, Auburn was led by Carlos Alvarez and Matt Skole at the plate, who each had multi-hit games. Alvarez extended his hitting streak to seven games.
Taylor Hill (0-2) pitched a good game on the mound for Auburn, retiring the first nine he faced in order before giving up three runs in his last two innings. Overall on the evening, Hill went five innings, giving up three earned runs on five hits, striking out five.
Travis Henke and Alex Kreis each worked in relief for Auburn. Henke gave up seven hits and four earned runs in two and one-third while Kreis allowed just one hit against him in an inning and two-thirds.
Auburn returns home Tuesday night when they welcome in the Vermont Lake Monsters, last year's Washington Nationals affiliate in the New York-Penn League. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm at Falcon Park. For tickets, please visit www.auburndoubledays.com.
