Auburn Doubledays News Release
Lowell, MA - The Auburn Doubledays landed four players on the 2011 New York-Penn League All-Star rosters as announced on Monday evening.
Hendry Jimenez will be the starting second baseman for the National League Team. In 36 games this year with Auburn, Jimenez is batting .292 with three home runs and is second on the team with 29 RBIs.
Matt Skole will be the starting DH/utility man on the National League. The 5th round pick this year out of Georgia Tech is off to a great start as a Doubleday, hitting .285 with a team leading four home runs and 32 RBIs. Skole was also tied for the second most doubles in the league (15) entering play Monday night.
Bryce Ortega is the backup shortstop on the National League roster, a spot behind Brooklyn shortstop, Danny Muno. Ortega, a 41st round pick by the Nationals out of Arizona has been extremely impressive defensively, offensively, and on the base paths this year for Auburn. In just 33 games this year, Ortega is batting .365 at the plate. His average is the second highest in the league, although Ortega is not currently eligible for the batting race due to a lack of plate appearances. Ortega has also been dominant on the bases, swiping 14 bases in 16 tries, and has shown off great range and a strong throwing arm as the Doubledays' everyday shortstop.
Joining Jimenez, Skole, and Ortega, is Ben Grisz, the lone Doubledays pitcher to make the All-Star team. Grisz, a non-drafted free agent signee this past June from Duke University, has been extremely impressive on the mound this year. In eleven appearances this year, Grisz has posted a 1-0 record with a 1.35 ERA and four saves in four chances. Opponents are hitting just .159 against Grisz this year, which is the fourth lowest batting average against any reliever in the league.
The 2011 New York-Penn League All-Star Game will be held at LaLacheur Park in Lowell, MA on Tuesday, August 16th.
