
Goldeyes Edge Wingnuts in Rubber Game

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA - The Wichita Wingnuts (16-9) lost 4-3 to the Winnipeg Goldeyes (14-12) at Shaw Park on Wednesday afternoon.
Wichita jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but Winnipeg scored single runs in the first, third, sixth, and ninth innings to pull away with the win.
Tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth, Nick Liles lined a single to center field with one out. Nate Samson followed with a first-pitch double to left-center that put runners on second and third. After Tyler Graham walked, Amos Ramon drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly down the right field line that scored Liles.
Wichita scored in the top of the first for a fifth straight game on their road trip. Abel Nieves and John Rodriguez hit back-to-back singles. With first and third and two outs, Cole Armstrong slugged a three-run homer to right-center field off Goldeyes' starter Mark Hardy.
Winnipeg manufactured their first run in the bottom of the first. Graham struck out leading off but reached on a dropped third strike. Graham stole second, took third on a throwing error by Armstrong, and scored on Ramon's groundout to shorstop.
Graham and Ramon executed a double steal with one out in the bottom of the third, setting up an RBI groundout to shortstop from Josh Mazzola that cut the Wingnuts' lead to 3-2.
Fehlandt Lentini tied the game for Winnipeg in the sixth on a two-out, line drive single to right field.
Chris Smith started for the Wingnuts and took a no-decision, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits in six innings. Smith walked one and tied a season-high with eight strikeouts.
Hardy also took a no-decision, allowing three earned runs on six hits in six innings. Hardy walked two and struck out four.
Patrick Keating recorded two outs in the top of the ninth to pick up the win in relief. Lincoln Holdzkom took the loss for Wichita.
Daniel Bennett worked one and one-third scoreless relief innings and struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh.
Amberson doubled in the second to extend his hitting streak to 12 games.
The Wingnuts take Thursday off and open a four-game series against the St. Paul Saints beginning with a double header on Friday evening. First pitch for game one is at 5:05 p.m. One ticket grants admission for both games. Ryan Hinson will start for the Wingnuts with Anthony Capra scheduled for the nightcap.
