Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The Winnipeg Goldeyes built a 6-1 lead on Saturday night. They even led 6-4 heading into the ninth inning. Trouble was, the closer couldn't get it done.
The usually reliable Patrick Keating allowed two runs in the ninth and two more in the 10th, as the Goldeyes were beaten 8-6 by the Kansas City T-Bones in front of 6,028 at Shaw Park.
With the loss, the Goldeyes fell to 45-40 and remained 2 1/2 games behind the Gary SouthShore RailCats in the wild card hunt with 15 games remaining. Gary lost 4-1 to Sioux Falls on Saturday.
The Goldeyes opened the scoring in the bottom of the third when Tyler Graham beat out an infield single, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Fehlandt Lentini.
After Kansas City tied it in the top of the fourth, Winnipeg scored four in the bottom of the fourth as Ryan Scoma singled, Casey Haerther singled and both came home to score on a double by Luis Alen. Alen came home on a triple by Kevin Moesquit and Moesquit scored on a single by Graham.
Josh Mazzola hit a solo homer in the sixth to make it 6-1, but Kansas City scored three in the seventh. The big blow was a two-run homer by Luis Rivera.
Then, with two out in the ninth, Kansas City tied it on another two-run homer by Rivera. Rivera had two home runs on the season heading into the game and he doubled his output on Saturday night.
In the 10th, the T-Bones completed the comeback as Jairo Perez doubled home Justin Bass and Joey Gathright to give Kansas City its second win in as many nights.
T-Bones reliever Chad Robinson (3-3, 3.79 ERA) was the winning pitcher, while Keating (4-2, 3.35 ERA) not only blew the save but also took the loss.
The loss spoiled two solid performances. Casey Haerther went four-for-four for the Fish, while starter Jason Jarvis, in his first start for Winnipeg after being acquired on Thursday, pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. Winnipeg finished the game with 13 hits.
The Goldeyes and T-Bones will meet up in the final game of this three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at Shaw Park. Matt Jackson (2-0, 4.79 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg. T-Bones manager Kevin Hook has not yet decided on a starter.
Tickets for all Goldeyes games are available through Ticketmaster by calling 1-855-GOLDEYE, clicking on Ticketmaster.ca or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
