Sox Pitching Holds Lemurs to One Run

Amarillo, TX - The Amarillo Sox (45-41) got strong pitching and some early runs to beat the Laredo Lemurs (45-41) 7-1, Saturday night at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium.

The Sox offense set the tone early in the game posting three runs in the first. Joe Weik walked with one out to get the offense moving. Cory Patton followed up with a double that scored Weik from first, with him running on the pitch to make it 1-0 Sox. The next batter, Kyle Nichols hit his third home run of the series to drive in Patton and to give the Sox a 3-0 advantage after one.

Later in the game Joe Weik would hit his second home run of the series to make it a 6-1 game. Sox catcher, Trey Ford had a big night at the plate, going three for three, with three RBI's. KC Serna also chipped in, with two hits, and two runs.

The Lemurs top hitter for the night was Jimmy Mojica, who went two for five, with a couple of singles.

Starter pitcher Joe Newby pitched seven strong for the Sox, giving up one run, on seven hits, with two walks, and five strikeouts, to earn the win. The win moves Newby to 5-4 on the season with a 3.55 ERA.

Lemurs' starter Tyler Pearson took the loss, pitching three innings, giving up four runs, on five hits, with four walks, and five strikeouts. The loss gives Pearson a 1-1 record with the Lemurs and a 4.05 ERA.

The loss drops the Lemurs out of first place and into a second place tie with the Amarillo Sox, one game behind the Grand Prairie AirHogs.

The Lemurs have one more home stand this season. The Sioux City Explores will come to town and face the Lemurs for the first time in their existence on Tuesday, August 20th at 7:30pm at Uni-Trade Stadium. For tickets call 956-7LEMURS or visit LaredoLemurs.com.
