Sox win fourth straight game

AMARILLO, TX - The Sox defeat the Lemurs 7-1 as Joe Newby earns his fifth win of the season. The game at Amarillo National Bank Sox Staium hosted 1,847 fans and lasted three hours. Laredo committed four errors which only cost one run while the Sox committed two. Ten hits for Amarillo were two more than the total for the Lemurs.

The Sox scored early with a run batted in from Cory Patton's double, scoring Joe Weik. The next batter, Kyle Nichols hit his third homerun in two games, making it 3-0. Valencia would single with two outs in the first inning, but was caught trying to steal second base. Amarillo would score again in the third after Nichols reached on an error, two batters were walked, and then Trey Ford was walked for Amarillo's fourth run. Jermel Lomack struck out looking to end the inning.

Tyler Pearson (L, 1-1), the starter for the Lemurs left after three innings pitched, having allowed four runs, three earned on five hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Michael Suk would take over on the mound and pitch all five remaining innings for Laredo. In the top of the fifth, Laredo got on the scoreboard with a run driven in by Mike Provencher, scoring Brian Peterson, who led off with a single. All eight of the Lemurs' hits were single in the game.

The bottom of the fifth featured another run for Amarillo. KC Serna singled and stole second as Trey Ford, the next batter singled him in, making the score 5-1. Laredo threatened in the sixth with a walk and a hit but Joe Newby was able to leave the inning with a strikeout. Joe Weik hit a solo homerun for the second night in a row during the bottom of the sixth. In the seventh, Ford doubled in his second run of the game as he went three-for-four.

Joe Newby (W, 5-4) pitched seven innings for the Sox and gave up a run on seven hits while walking two ad striking out five. Andrew Romo relieved Newby for the eighth and ninth while striking out two batters in each inning and allowing one hit with a walk and a hit-batter.

With the win, the Sox improve to 45-41, while the Lemurs fall to the same record on the season. Sunday will conclude the three-game series between Amarillo and Laredo. Game time is set for 6:05pm with the pregame show starting at 5:55pm on Ustream via www.amarillosox.com .
