Saints Piece It Together for 7-1 Win over Explorers

SIOUX CITY, IA - Without both of their catchers, the sixth best hitter in the league and their leading home run and RBI man the St. Paul Saints got it done on Saturday night and defeated the Sioux City Explorers 7-1 at Lewis and Clark Park.

The Saints scored all of their runs over the first four innings and then watched as pitcher Anthony Claggett set a career high with 10 strikeouts. In the first Adam Frost led off with a single to left-center. With two outs, Frost took off from first and the second baseman went to cover the bag. Willie Cabrera singled threw the vacated area and right fielder Peter Barrows never saw the ball which allowed Frost to score and give the Saints a 1-0 lead.

In the third Dan Kaczrowski walked with two outs and Brian Burgamy followed with a two-run homer to left, his fourth of the season, and third against the Explorers, to give the Saints a 3-0 lead.

The Saints put the game away in the fourth with a four run inning. Jose Hernandez led off the inning with a solo homer to left, his sixth of the season, which put the Saints up 4-0. With two outs, and a runner at first, Chris Manning walked. Manning joined the Saints just before the game and was playing at NAIA Doan College this year. Frost made it 5-0 with an RBI single and Kaczrowski made it 7-0 with a two-run single.

That was more than enough for Claggett who continued his dominance this season. He entered the game with the sixth best ERA in the league. Despite not having a clean inning until the seventh, Claggett stranded eight runners over his 7.0 innings of work (the Explorers left 11 total) and gave up the lone run in the sixth on an RBI double by Peter Barrows. Claggett went 7.0 innings allowing one run on eight hits while walking one and striking out a career high 10. He has now pitched at least 6.0 innings in 17 of his 18 starts.

Manning collected his first professional hit in the sixth inning with a single. Three separate Saints players have collected their first hit in the last three games with Andy Henkemeyer doing so on August 15 and Adam Seaman doing it last night.

The Saints gained a game on three teams in the wild card and now trail the wild card leading Gary SouthShore Railcats by 4.5 games with 15 games to go.

The same two teams meet Sunday evening in the finale of the three game series at 6:05 p.m. at Lewis and Clark Park. The Saints send LHP Cole Nelson (4-2, 2.64) to the mound against Explorers RHP Andy Noga (3-10, 5.84). The game can be heard on Club 1220 AM.
