Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Gary, IN - Ben Moore controlled the RailCats bats from start to finish as Sioux Falls took the series from the RailCats with a 4-1 decision on Saturday night. The RailCats dropped to 47-37 with the defeat, Sioux Falls improved to 37-47.
Sioux Falls jumped on the board first with a pair of runs in the second. Jared Clark doubled home Tim Pahuta with a shot to right-center. Later in the inning, Stephen King singled home Clark to make it 2-0. Billy Spottiswood avoided further damage by stranding the bases loaded on a flyout by Cory Morales.
The RailCats cut the lead in half on their first hit of the ball game. With runners on first and second, Zac Mitchell scored on Mike Massaro's single to right center. Mitchell's run made it 2-1 Sioux Falls after three innings.
In the fourth, the Canaries rallied right back to take a 4-1 lead. With one out and a runner on first, Stephen King doubled off the wall in left. Nick Van Stratten followed with an RBI groundout and King scored on Cory Morales' single to right.
Billy Spottiswood went six innings for the RailCats. He allowed four runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out three. The right-hander's streak of quality starts came to an end at five straight starts.
The RailCats missed a bevy of opportunities stranding runners in scoring position in each inning between the third and seventh.
Ben Moore was the real story of the game keeping the RailCats off the scoreboard after the third inning. Moore earned his ninth win of the year. In seven innings the right-hander allowed one run on seven hits and no walks. He struck out four and threw 128 pitches.
The 'Cats bullpen was strong in relief of Billy Spottiswood. Matt Jernstad retired each of the six batters he faced and Ian Durham had a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
The RailCats have now dropped eight of the nine games against Sioux Falls this season and all five matchups at U. S. Steel Yard.
The RailCats and Canaries complete their three-game series on Sunday with a 2:10 p.m. first pitch. RHP Morgan Coombs (4-2, 5.42 ERA) will throw for the RailCats, RHP Kyle Vazquez (2-2, 5.19 ERA) will go for Sioux Falls.
