Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Winnipeg Goldeyes veteran slugger Jon Weber said on Friday that "this team will hit."

He's certainly been right this weekend.

Saturday night, in front of 5,867 spectators at Shaw Park in downtown Winnipeg, the Goldeyes scored 11 runs on 12 hits and got a great start from Ace Walker en route to an 11-2 shellacking of the visiting Lincoln Saltdogs 11-2.

With the win, the Goldeyes won their third straight game and their second straight in this three-game set against Lincoln. The Fish have scored 20 runs and pounded out 21 hits in two games against Lincoln and have improved to 24-17 on the season.

It was a big night for Wes Long. The Goldeyes shortstop has struggled at the plate this season and was hitting just .227 heading into the game, but he went two-for-five with a three-run homer (his first homer of the year) and four runs batted in and took over the team lead in RBI with 28.

"It was nice hitting that first home run although it took 30 games to get that monkey off my back," said Long, who has 18 RBI in his last 14 games. "I just wasn't swinging the bat well. It was one of those things. But you just have to keep working through it. I'm a lifetime .300 hitter and as long as I keep working and keep having good at bats, I'll be a .300 hitter this year.

"But I haven't been a lot different than a lot of guys on the team. We haven't been terrible, we just haven't been hot. We haven't had big hits when we've needed them. Now we're starting to get hot and we're starting to get those big hits."

While Walker pitched brilliantly, allowing no runs on only four hits over the first eight innings, the Goldeyes scored early and often. In fact, the Fish put up crooked numbers in four of the first five innings.

The home team took a 2-0 lead in the first when leadoff man Price Kendall walked and scored on the first double of the game by centerfielder Kody Kaiser, who scored when Weber hit into a double play with Kaiser at third and nobody out.

The Fish made it 5-0 after two innings when Long hit his three-run homer on a hanging slider from Lincoln starter Jordan Stern. Brian Joynt and Kendall scored in front of him.

The Goldeyes put up three more in the fourth. Kaiser pounded out his second double of the game then Brian Myrow was hit by a pitch. With two on, Weber doubled home the two base runners and then scored when Luis Alen singled and an error sent Alen to second and Weber to the plate.

The Goldeyes made it 11-0 in the fifth when Kendall walked and Kaiser hit his third double of the game to drive him home. Kendall scored on a Long double and then Long scored on a single by Weber.

Long finished with four RBI, Weber had three and Kaiser had two.

Walker (3-3, 3.86 ERA) received a nice ovation from the crowd when he left the ball game with one out in the ninth. Walker, who went 8.1 innings and allowed two runs on eight scattered hits, got the win for Winnipeg, while Stern (0-1, 13.50 ERA) suffered the loss for Lincoln. Eugene Wright mopped up the ninth inning for Winnipeg.

Sunday afternoon, lefthander Chris Salamida (3-1, 3.86 ERA) will take the mound for the Goldeyes while righthander John James (5-1, 5.05 ERA) will toe the slab for Lincoln.

The game can be heard live, with Paul Edmonds on Sports Radio 1290, beginning with 55 with Forney at 12 p.m.
