St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (June 25, 2011) - It started ugly and ended ugly for the St. Paul Saints, who walked 10 men on the night, but they did enough in between to defeat the Wichita Wingnuts 9-6 on Saturday night at Midway Stadium in front of 5,076.
With the Saints leading 9-4 in the ninth Alberto Rolon was looking for a four inning save. The ninth started with a single from Mike Conroy and then a double by Jose Duran. Right fielder Brandon Tripp's throw to second caromed off Duran and skipped into shallow left allowing Conroy to score and making it 9-5. Rolon followed by getting the next two hitters, but then gave up a bloop single to Jorge Delgado which scored Duran to cut the lead to three. Rolon departed for left-hander Kyle Carr who faced left-hand hitting Josh Workman. Carr walked Workman which brought the tying run to the plate. The Saints made another pitching change bringing in closer Robert Manuel and the Wingnuts countered with a pinch hitter, the team's leading home run hitter, Ryan Patterson. On a full count pitch Manuel struck out Patterson swinging to end the game.
The Wingnuts jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first when Duran hit a solo homer to left off of starter Edwin Walker, his first of the season. A walk to Brent Clevlen, an infield single by Juan Richardson and a two-run double from Delgado finished the scoring in the inning. Delgado finished the night 3-5, falling a triple shy of the cycle with four RBI and a run scored.
The Saints offense, however, did enough on the night and got back into the groove pounding out 14 hits as eight of the nine Saints collected a hit and eight of nine collected a run.
The Saints wasted little time tying the game in the first as they loaded the bases with an Adam Frost lead off single, Justin Snyder being hit by a pitch and a walk to Shane Costa. Ole Sheldon came through with a two-run single to make it 3-2. Jason Cooper walked and Brandon Tripp added an RBI single tying the game up.
The Saints took a 4-3 lead in the second as Jonathan Van Every hit a solo homer to right, his eighth of the season.
In the third the Saints added three more as Sheldon and Cooper led off with back-to-back doubles, the latter driving in a run to make it 5-3. The RBI for Cooper gives him an RBI in seven straight. With one out Ronnie Bourquin singled to center knocking home Cooper making it 6-3. Bourquin stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. He scored on a single by Alex Garabedian to give the Sains a 7-3 lead.
The same two teams meet in the finale of the three game series Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Jake Schmidt (5-0, 3.16) to the mound against Wingnuts RHP Justin Murray (2-2, 4.73). It is Gallagher 4D. The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
