Saints Overcome Wingnuts' Early Lead

ST. PAUL, MN- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 9-6 to the St. Paul Saints at Midway Stadium on Saturday night.

Trailing 9-4 in the top of the ninth, the Wingnuts eventually rallied to bring the tying run to the plate before Robert Manuel, who earned the win on Friday night, notched the final out to earn the save. Mike Conroy singled to center field to lead off the inning. Jose Duran doubled down the right field line, sending Conroy to third. Conroy then scored when Brandon Tripp's throw from bounced into shallow left field. Alberto Rolon retired Brent Clevlen and Juan Richardson before allowing an RBI single to center to Jorge Delgado that cut the lead to 9-6. Kyle Carr relieved Rolon and walked Josh Workman to bring the tying run to the plate. Manuel then came in for Carr and struck out pinch hitter Ryan Patterson to end the game.

Wichita jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Duran hit a solo home run to left two batters in. Later in the inning, Delgado ripped a two-run double to the left-center field fence that scored Clevlen and Richardson.

The Saints rallied for three in the bottom of the first to tie it. With the bases loaded and no outs, Ole Sheldon lined a single to center against Wingnuts' starter Steve MacFarland to bring the Saints within one run. After Jason Cooper walked to re-load the bases, Tripp hit a broken bat single to left that tied the game. MacFarland escaped further trouble when Clevlen gunned down Sheldon at the plate after tagging up on Ronnie Bourquin's flyball to center field. MacFarland retierd Alex Garabedian on a popout to third base to end the inning.

Jonathan Van Every hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the second to give the Saints their first lead. St. Paul added three more in the third inning with Cooper, Bourquin, and Garabedian each driving in a run.

St. Paul went ahead 9-3 in the seventh on Bourquin's RBI double to left-center and Van Every's sacrifice fly to right.

Delgado hit a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning to account for Wichita's fourth run. Delgado finished the night with three hits and four RBI.

MacFarland took the loss, allowing seven earned runs on seven hits in two and one-third innings. MacFarland walked three and struck out seven.

Edwin Walker earned the win for the Saints. Walker allowed three earned runs on six hits, walked five, and struck out three.

Brandon Mathes worked two and two-thirds scoreless innings in relief of MacFarland. Kendy Batista chipped in a scoreless bottom of the eighth.
