Amarillo Bullpen Shuts Down Captains For 6-3 Win

AMARILLO, Tx.---Amarillo's bullpen threw four scoreless innings as the Sox defeated the Shreveport-Bossier Captains 6-3 in the second game of their series at National Bank Sox Stadium Saturday night. That came a night after the Captains tagged Sox relievers for eight runs in the ninth inning for a 16-8 win Friday night.

All six of the Sox runs came with two outs, including Fehlandt Lentini's grand slam off Joel Kirsten (3-3) in the second inning, the first Amarillo grand slam of the year.

Shreveport-Bossier took the lead in the first when Mike Provencher led off the game with a line drive home run to left field, his third of the year, off Amarillo spot starter Corey Bass (2-2). The Captains would make it 2-0 in the second when Uriak Marquez doubled and scored on a Joe Urtuzuastegui single.

Amarillo took the lead on Lentini's home run and never trailed again. They made it 5-2 in the third when third baseman Van Pope hit into a double play, scoring first baseman Cyle Hankerd from third. The Captains would score their final run in the fifth when Urtuzuastegui came in on Brian Peterson's RBI double, his fourth hit and sixth RBI of the series.

Amarillo plated their final run in the last of the fifth when designated hitter Tim Alberts scored Pope with a double. Alberts was 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored.

The bullpens would take over in the game's final frames. Amarillo's Austin Chambliss pitched three scoreless innings, walking three and striking out two. He also picked Marquez off first base with one out in the seventh inning. Pat Overholt allowed a walk and a hit in the top of the ninth but would retire the side when Urtuzuastegui hit into a 6-3 double play to end the game to pick up his first save of the year. The Captains hit into four double plays in the contest.

The Captains relief corps. was solid as well as Lee Henry and Jameson Maj pitched 2.2 hitless and scoreless innings. Starting with the final out of the fifth, Shreveport-Bossier pitchers retired the last 10 batters they faced.

Bass allowed three runs on seven hits in five innings. He walked none and struck out three. Kirsten lasted 5.1, his shortest start as a member of the Captains. He gave up six runs on nine hits, walked three and struck out four.

The rubber game of the series takes place Sunday, June 26 at 6:05 p.m. Ryan DiPietro (6-2, 3.75) will take the mound for the Captains against Justin Garcia (5-1, 4.56) for Amarillo.
