Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, PA - Tommy Goebel started his holiday celebration early, notching his first multi-goal game in the American Hokcey League as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins posted a 4-3 win against the Albany River Rats on Saturday night.
The win upped the Penguins' record to 17-11-1-1 headed into the Christmas break, while Albany fell to 10-15-3-2. The Penguins overcame a pair of one-goal deficits to record their second win against the River Rats in as many tries this season.
Mike Angelidis gave Albany both of its leads, cashing in on a power play 2:01 into the game, then putting the visitors back in the lead following a Janne Pesonen marker. All three of those goals came within the first five mintues of the game.
Goebel, who recorded 10 goals with the Wheeling Nailers to start the year, picked up his second of the AHL season by stealing an attempted clear in the Albany zone, then picking the far side at 6:09 of the middle period.
Chris Minard added to his league lead by banging home his 20th goal of the season from close range with 1:49 left in the second period, giving the Pens their first lead of the night. The goal was also his 10th on the power play this year, tops in the league by one.
Goebel opened the third period scoring by fluttering a shot off Daniel Manzato's glove hand 3:15 into the third, before Ryan Weston beat John Curry two minutes later for what turned out to be the final tally of the night.
The Penguins now get five days of rest before squaring off with the Philadelphia Phantoms at the Spectrum on December 26.
