Monarchs Waved Through Worcester

WORCESTER, MA - The referee waved off two goals that the Manchester Monarchs put in the net, the same deficit that ended the game with the Worcester Sharks on top, 3-1, in front of 2,841 fans at the DCU Center on Saturday night.

Manchester (12-14-0-4) is tied for fifth place in the Atlantic Division with 28 points. Worcester (16-13-0-0) is tied for third place in the Atlantic Division with 32 points.

"We probably deserved a little better faint", said Head Coach Mark Morris. "It's unfortunate that we had two calls that didn't go our way and goals that were called back. It's a part of the game; nobody likes it but tonight wasn't our night."

Right wing Ryan Vesce picked up a tally of his own at 13:42 of the first period. Defenseman Derek Joslin sent a shot in on goaltender Jonathan Bernier from the right face-off circle. Bernier dropped to his knees for the save but the rebound landed in front of him for Vesce to pick up, step to the right side and flip over the goaltender. Center Cory Larose picked up his second assist of the night on Vesce's eighth goal of the season.

Following the referee waving off a goal for Manchester, former Monarchs captain and defenseman Brendan Buckley put the Sharks on the board with a shorthanded tally at 10:31 of the opening frame. Larose broke into the Monarchs zone with the puck and handed it off to Vesce at the top of the right face-off circle. Vesce quickly sent the puck over to Buckley in the left face-off circle. Buckley sent a backhand in on net for his first goal of the season.

Larose scored his 13th goal of the season for his third point of the night at 1:34 of the second period. Bernier stopped the puck behind the net but stayed back there a little too long as Vesce stole the puck away from the goaltender and tossed it out front for Larose. As Bernier tried to get back in the net, Larose flipped the puck into the open cage.

The Monarchs put their lone goal on the board at 10:43 of the third period off the stick of right wing Bud Holloway on the power play. Right wing Jon Rheault took the puck toward the net and netminder Thomas Greiss made the save on the right doorstep. Rheault carried the puck behind the cage toward the left corner and then found center Tyler Mosienko open behind the net on the right side. Mosienko lined-up Holloway in the slot for a one-timer that flew past Greiss into the left side of the net.

Referee Ryan Fraser waved off the second Monarchs goal of the night after left wing Paul Crosty backhanded the puck into the net after the whistle was blown.

"We competed hard in the latter part of the game," said Morris. "We had a costly turnover that put us behind the eight ball. We are making small improvements to different aspects of the game.

"We're looking forward to the break. We've had a tough stretch as of late and are looking to rebound after the holiday."

Bernier (6-8-2) took his eighth loss of the season with 24 saves on 27 shots. Greiss (9-8-0) earned his ninth victory with 19 saves.

Manchester went 1-for-5 on the power play. Worcester was 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
