Springfield Falcons News Release
The Springfield Falcons and Toronto Marlies meet for the first and only time in Springfield this season when they get together on Saturday night at the MassMutual Center. The Falcons and Marlies will conclude their season series on Sunday, February 15 when Springfield visits Toronto.
Overall, this will only be the third all-time meeting between the Falcons and Marlies with the two teams splitting a pair of games back in the 2006-07 campaign. Springfield beat Toronto in a shootout by a score of 3-2 back on November 17, 2006 in Toronto's first ever visit to the MassMutual Center. The Falcons lone trip to Toronto in their franchise history occurred back on February 3, 2007 with the Falcons dropping that contest by a score of 3-1. Springfield and Toronto did not play each other during the 2007-08 campaign.
The Falcons head into tonight's game looking to rebound from a 4-1 loss suffered against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Friday night at the Arena at Harbor Yard. Rob Schremp scored the Falcons' lone goal, while goaltender Devan Dubnyk turned aside 35 of 38 shots on goal. Springfield is now 12-12-3-1 on the season, good for 28 points. The Falcons remain in the hunt in a very compact Atlantic Division. The Falcons remain only two points behind fourth place Worcester, four points behind third place Hartford, five points behind second place Portland and six points behind first place Providence. The Falcons visit the Bruins on Sunday in the last game before the holiday break.
The Marlies head into Springfield having earned a point in the standings on Friday as they suffered a 4-3 shootout loss to the Providence Bruins at the Dunkin Donuts Center. Tim Stapleton, Max Taylor, and Mark Bell all scored for Toronto, while goaltender Justin Pogge stopped 28 of 31 shots on goal. The Marlies now have a record of 13-12-0-3 good for 29 points in the Western Conference's North Division. Toronto now has points in two straight games (1-0-0-1) as they conclude their New England road trip on Sunday in Hartford.
SCHREMP BACK WITH FALCONS: On Monday, the Edmonton Oilers assigned center Rob Schremp to the Falcons and he was back in the lineup on Friday at Bridgeport scoring his second goal of the season.
The 5'11", 200-pound forward from Syracuse, New York was recalled from Springfield on December 2 and collected three assists in four games with the Oilers. Schremp, the Oilers' second choice (1st round), 25th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, made his season debut with Edmonton on December 3 and collected his first career NHL point with an assist on Marc Pouliot's game-winning goal versus the Dallas Stars at Rexall Place. In the Oilers next game, a 5-4 shootout win at Los Angeles on December 5, Schremp registered a career-high two assists.
The 22-year-old forward is second on the Falcons in scoring with two goals and 17 assists for 19 points in 19 games this year. He leads the team with 17 assists and Schremp was Springfield's leading scorer last year with 23 goals and 53 assists for 76 points in 78 games.
