Goats Split as David Masters Bullpen

HARTFORD - Unable to master David Masters, the Hartford Yard Goats fell to Harrisburg in eight innings, 5-4, earning a split of their doubleheader Tuesday night, before the club's record-setting 49th sellout of the season at Dunkin' Donuts Park, 6,105. Hartford (33-33) won the opener, 5-3 helped by back-to-back home runs by Tyler Nevin and Colton Welker. Masters led Harrisburg with three hits and three RBI in the second game.

The attendance pushed Hartford over the 400,000 mark for the second straight season. With two home dates remaining Hartford has drawn 401,715.

In the first game, Hartford overcame a 1-0 deficit with a five-run fourth inning. The Yard Goats chased starter Mario Sanchez, sending 10 men to the plate. After Manny Melendez reached on an infield hit, Nevin and Welker slugged back-to-back home runs. Sanchez retired the next two hitters but a single by Brian Serven, double by Carlos Herrera and run-scoring singles by starting pitcher Ashton Goudeau and Vance Vizcaino sent Sanchez to the showers.

Meanwhile, Goudeau was unable to survive the fifth. After being reached for a one-out double and walk, the right-hander was lifted for reliever Tate Scioneaux, who served up RBI-singles to Dante Bichette, Jr. and Nick Banks. The veteran right-hander then retired eight of the last 10 batters, including four on strike outs to nail down his fourth victory (4-2).

Vizcaino had an RBI and two hits, while Herrera and Serven each had two hits and a run-scored to compliment the Nevin and Welker homers.

Bichette, Jr. had a double, two singles and an RBI for Harrisburg. Sanchez, who dropped to 9-5, lasted 3 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits. He struck out three and did not walk anybody.

The Yard Goats jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning of the second contest on Nevin's second, two-run homer of the twin bill and a home run by Arvicent Perez. But after scoring a run in the fifth off of reliever Mitch Horacek on an RBI-single by Jake Lowery, Harrisburg (30-33) tied in sixth on a two-run double by David Masters off Jordan Foley.

Harrisburg scored two in the eighth on an RBI-double by Nick Banks and Masters' run-scoring single. Manny Melendez brought the Goats within a run in the eighth on an RBI-single, but Eastern League saves leader Aaron Barrett struck out Mylz Jones with Melendez at third to register his 31st save of the year.

Lefty reliever Jordan Mills recorded the win with two scoreless innings of work. Scott Griggs absorbed the loss allowing two runs on three hits in the eighth.

Harrisburg now leads the season series, 9-6.

The five-game series continues Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Brandon Gold will pitch for the Yard Goats against RHP Kevin McGowan for the Senators. The game will be broadcast on 97.9 FM, 100.9 FM, 1410 AM, in Spanish on 1120 AM and on the internet on newsradio1410.iheart.com. A player awards ceremony will precede the game and a Yard Goats 2020 magnet schedule will be given away to fans.
