Wheeling Nailers News Release

CINCINNATI, OH- For the second time this season, the Wheeling Nailers and their opposition combined to put twelve goals on the scoreboard, as they took on the Cincinnati Cyclones on Saturday night. Unfortunately for Wheeling, it was Cincinnati who ended up with more, as the host Cyclones potted three goals in the third period, breaking a 4-4 tie, and ultimately picking up a 7-5 win at U.S. Bank Arena.

Both teams found the back of the net in the first period. The Cyclones opened the scoring at the 8:01 mark, just two seconds after a penalty to Peter Merth had expired. Taylor Aronson took the puck in the right circle, and slid it across to Anthony Luciani, who drilled in a one-timer from the left circle. A little more than five minutes later, the Nailers tied the score on a power play marker. Peter Lenes danced around a defender in the slot, and sent the puck toward the goal, where it was deflected in by Christiaan Minella.

The second period featured tons of scoring, as the contest went back-and-forth. The first goal came at the 41-second mark, as Cincinnati's Michael Pelech fed Mathieu Aubin in the slot. 2:56 later, the Cyclones took a two-goal lead, Garrett Wilson deflected in Maury Edwards' shot from the right side. 1:11 after that, the Nailers pulled within one, as Peter Lenes' pass deflected off of a skate to Zach Hansen, who deposited his first career goal into the back of the cage. Andrew Hotham tied the score at the 9:32 mark of the middle frame, as he took a feed from Zach Hansen, off of a face-off win by Chase Watson. Cincinnati regained the lead just 26 seconds later, as Aubin setup Taylor Aronson on the left side of the slot. Once again, Wheeling tied the game, needing just 43 seconds, as Denver Manderson scored on a wrist shot from the left circle, sending the game into the third period tied at four.

In the first minute of the third period, the Cyclones jumped ahead by two, as Mathieu Aubin and Alain Goulet found the twine with a pair of goals in a span of 26 seconds. Aubin's goal came off of a feed from Michael Pelech, while Goulet's came on a wrist shot from the right circle. Dan Eves added an insurance goal 4:57 later, when he took a pass on a 2-on-1 from Aubin, who joined Pelech with a five-point game. Ben Farrer got one goal back for the Nailers, as he chipped the puck over Brian Foster's left shoulder, giving the contest a 7-5 final score in favor of the home team.

Brian Foster picked up the win for Cincinnati, making 23 saves on 28 shots. Peter Delmas took the loss for Wheeling, stopping 27 of the 34 shots he faced.

The Nailers will conclude their nine-game road trip on Sunday afternoon at 5:05, when they make their first ever trip to Sears Centre Arena to face the Chicago Express.
