
Gladiators outlast Generals, 4-3

Steve Slonina's scored in the seventh round of the shootout while Chris Durno's second tally of the night with 23 seconds left in the third helped lift the Gladiators to a 4-3 shootout win over the Greensboro Generals on Tuesday night at the Greensboro Coliseum.
The Gladiators took a 1-0 lead on an odd man rush 10:38 into the opening period. Brandon Dietrich dropped a pass to Evan Nielsen at the right wing point where the defenseman ripped a slap-shot past Greensboro netminder Jamie Hodson for his 6th goal of the season. Kevin Doell also added an assist on the goal as he worked the puck out of the Gladiators zone to Dietrich.
Greensboro tied the contest up at 1-1 as Matt Turek took a centering feed from through the legs of Mike Bayrack and slid the puck past Gladiators netminder Michael Garnett at 3:15 of the second period. Steve Slaton also added an assist on the goal Pete Gardiner gave the Generals their first lead of the game as he found a loose puck in the slot and flipped it past Garnett. Mark Turner and Geno Parrish added the assists on the goal at 11:14 of the second period.
Chris Durno found a loose puck in the slot 43 seconds into the third period and ripped a shot over an outstretched Hodson to tie the contest at two goals apiece. Steve Slonina and Kris Goodjohn added the assists on the equalizing goal for the Gladiators.
Greensboro broke the tie as Bryson Busniuk took a centering feed in the slot and ripped a shot past Garnett at 6:55 of the third period. Eric Fortier and Randy Perry added the assists on the go ahead goal for Greensboro.
Gwinnett battled back as Chris Durno added his second tally of the nigh with just 23 seconds left in the third. With Garnett pulled in favor of an extra attacker, a Goodjohn shot deflected off of Hodson right to a wide-open Durno in the high slot where the forward pulled the trigger past the netminder. Steve Slonina also had an assist on the goal to help send the game to overtime and eventually a shootout.
Michael Garnett turned aside 35 shots in the overtime win for the Gladiators to help Gwinnett improve to 40-22-7 and tie a team high for wins in a season.
The Gladiators are back in action on Thursday as they travel to Florence to battle the Pride in a 7:05 p.m. tilt.
The Gladiators finish their inaugural home regular season on Friday, April 2nd against Columbus and Saturday, April 3rd against Florence at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. It's Sports Radio 680 AM The Fan Appreciation weekend and both game get underway at 8:05 p.m.
