Falcons Open Final Homestand with Loss
March 30, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fresno Falcons News Release
FRESNO, Calif. â The Fresno Falcons opened their final homestand of the season Monday with a 5-1 loss to the Pacific Division-winning San Diego Gulls in front of 3,017 at Save Mart Center.
Fresno drew first blood when Kris Porter took a carom off the endboards and banked the puck off the left pad of Gulls goaltender Colin Zulianello to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead just 2:38 into the hockey game.
San Diego awoke in the middle period on their way to scoring three times. Mark Pederson poked in his league-leading 44th tally of the season at 4:20, followed quickly by the eventual game-winner off the stick of Scott Kirton at 6:26. The back-breaker, though, came with less than 20 seconds remaining in the second. Sandro Sbrocca held the puck on the endboards before finding Eric Skaug through the left circle, who one-timed his first goal as a pro into the back of the net for a 3-1 San Diego lead through two.
The game turned into a rout in the second half of the third period when the Gulls converted on their only power play chance of the night. Clayton Read beat Fresno goaltender Mike Brusseau five-hole at 14:40 to extend the lead to 4-1. Evgueni Nourislamov then notched his first goal as a pro, as well, unassisted at 17:39 to complete San Diego's run of five unanswered goals to finish the game.
The loss ends Fresno's season-high, four-game home winning streak and sends the Falcons to their fourth loss in a row overall. The club now has a record of 21-42-6 and remains in seventh place in the Pacific Division.
The Falcons continue this four-game homestand to complete the 2003-04 season tomorrow, when they host the Alaska Aces at 7 p.m. at Save Mart Center. The game marks the season's final Carl's Jr. Two-for-Tuesday, with two-for-one coupons available at participating restaurants.
Tickets to tomorrow's game can be purchased directly at Save Mart Center's Box Office and all Ticketmaster outlets, which include select Save Mart Supermarkets, Tower Records, Wherehouse Music and Ritmo Latino locations, charged by phone at 485-TIXS or bought online by clicking the Ticketmaster icon throughout www.fresnofalcons.com.
