ORLANDO, Fla. - For their last game in February, the Gladiators (17-32-3-2) take on the Orlando Solar Bears (25-20-4-2) once again at the Amway Center. Gwinnett snapped their season-high 10-game winless streak last night in their first shootout win of the season. Dylan Smoskowitz scored in his first professional shootout attempt and also picked up the first "first star" in his career.
Glads Notes:
Changes Made: Since Monday, the Gladiators have added or returned two defensemen and a forward to the roster. On Monday, the Pirates reassigned forward Dan O'Donoghue to the Gladiators after 16 games played in Portland. On Tuesday, Gwinnett announced that they had traded for defenseman Patrick McEachen from the Florida Everblades in exchange for cash on Saturday. And on Thursday, the Iowa Wild announced that they had released defenseman Joe Stejskal from his PTO contract, allowing him to return to the Gladiators after seven games with the Wild.
In Command: When leading after one period, the Gladiators are 12-5-2. When leading after two, they are even more solid - 13-2-1. And when the team scores first to set the tone, they are 13-8-2.
Follow the Leader: Casey Pierro-Zabotel currently leads the Eastern Conference in scoring with 59 points in 52 games played. He is tied for third among all ECHL skaters in points, behind Allen's Chad Costello (87pts) and Tulsa's Drew Fisher (61pts), and tied with Alaska's Brendan Connolly.
Gladiators Ahoy: Three players currently on the Gladiators roster have been assigned from their AHL affiliate, the Portland Pirates- James Melindy, Dan O'Donoghue, and Dyson Stevenson - and eight more - Joel Hanley (POR), Louis Domingue (POR), Mike Lee (POR), Jordon Southorn (POR) Greg Carey (POR), Bretton Stamler (HFD), Casey Pierro-Zabotel (NOR), and Joe Stejskal (IAW) - have spent time in the AHL this year.
Milestones: Sean Berkstresser scored his 200th professional point with a goal last night and is two games from his 450th professional game ... Casey Pierro-Zabotel is three goals from his 100th pro goal ... Geoff Paukovich is one goal away from his 50th as a pro ... Joe Stejskal played in his 100th AHL game on Tuesday with Iowa ... J.P. Labardo played in his 50th professional game last night ... Zach Yuen is four games away from his 100th professional match.
Streaks: Casey Pierro-Zabotel has had points in 14 of his last 19 games (11g, 11a) ... Brenden Walker has two goals and two assists in his last five games.
